The Prado Museum The Prado Museum is one of the finest museums in Europe. It is situated on the stylish Paseo del Prado, a lovely part of Madrid with the Retiro park just a short walk away and right next to the Ritz Hotel, the Palace Hotel, the fountain of Neptune and the stock exchange. It has some great art from artists like Goya, El Greco, Velázquez and Hieronymous Bosch. As it is a such a large museum, and can take an age to get around, you may want to consider making 2 trips to the museum. |

| Plaza Mayor The principal square in Madrid is the Plaza Mayor, which is south west of the Puerta del Sol . Built between 1617 and 1619, and restored in 1790 after a fire, it is in a part of the city known as "Madrid de los Austrias" (the Hapsburg monarchs having built it.), or what is also known as "Old Madrid". It is probably one of the finest plazas in Spain |

Bernabeu Stadium Real Madrid, officially the best football team of the 20th Century as recognized by FIFA, play at the famous Santiago Bernabéu stadium located near the Paseo de Castellana in Calle Concha Espina. The Bernabéu Stadium has capacity for around 75,000 seated spectators and was built in 1947. |

The Las Ventas Bullring Madrid's main bullring is called La Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas del Espíritu Santo, or more simply, Las Ventas (Alcalá street, Metro: Las Ventas). Built in mudejan style, this impressive building is formed of red brick and ceramic tiles. The construction, designed by José Espelius and Muñóz Monasterio, was terminated in 1929, although the ring itself wasn't inaugurated until 1931. Today the ring is also used for rock concerts and political meetings |

PUERTO DEL SOL Metro : 1, 2 and 3 Puerta del Sol is one of the most important of Madrid's squares. It is the place where young people meet; where people stop off to go to the Plaza Mayor and old Madrid; a place to shop in department and smaller stores and on 31st December, the New Year is brought in to the chimes of the Puerta del Sol clock. |

Royal Palace The Royal Palace in Madrid is actually used (but not owned) by the king of Spain for state ceremonial activities. The palace was built on the site of a former alcazar that burned down in 1734. It took 26 years to complete. A visitor to the palace today gets to see 50 of its 2800 rooms. |

| ESCORIAL The Royal Monastery of El Escorial is an imposing 16th Century edifice. Phillip II ordered its construction and its main architect was Juan Herrera to whom it owed most of its design and building. Many of the best artisans of that period also took part in the process. The Monastery also houses the Mausoleum of the Spanish Monarchs, and it is considered as one of the Eight Wonders of the World. |
